CAPRI Background and History

CAPRI Heart and Lung Institute, established in Kitsap County in 1978, provides cardiac and pulmonary patients with the training needed to lead happy and fulfilling lives and to overcome the challenges of their life-altering diagnoses. The mission of CAPRI is to improve the health of those in our community who are affected by, or who are at risk for, heart or lung disease, through rehabilitation, education and prevention.

CAPRI is the only cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program in Kitsap County. CAPRI also serves clients in Mason, Jefferson and Pierce Counties. Our Pulmonary rehab program is one of only three in Western Washington. The other two programs are in Seattle and Everett. Pulmonary diseases have increased by 163% in the past ten years. Thus our program is greatly needed and in high demand.

CAPRI Heart and Lung Institute’s cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help clients improve their health and return to full, active lives. Our programs have two parts:

1. Medically monitored exercise therapy to help clients exercise safely, increase endurance, strengthen muscles, and improve energy.

2. Education and support to help clients and their family members: understand their heart and/or lung condition; learn ways to reduce their risk for future problems; manage their symptoms, medications and dietary changes.

CAPRI Heart and Lung Institute also offers a maintenance program for rehab program graduates who wish to continue exercising at CAPRI and for spouses who wish to attend. These services are offered at a lower cost than most gyms and allow clients to continue receiving medical monitoring while maintaining their new healthy lifestyle. Rehab graduates are also encouraged to continue the educational segment of the programs in order to receive the most current up to date information on their condition.
